Even though I would be considered as a member of the New Right, this approach would make me open to supporting a more Reaganite candidate

Awesome summation of our problem. I will not vote for Trump this year because I believe that would be an affirmation of what MAGA believes; take over the party and the true conservatives will fall in line. I am also choosing a different path than Goldberg colleague Nick Contaggio who will vote for Biden.

My pushback is this. The history of 3rd parties in the United States is one of short term failure but long term policy wins. The 1840-50s Free Soilers never elected a president, but their Whig busting engendered a party that achieved their policy goals. This is not all to the good. I would argue that the People's and Progressive Parties enabled the worst president of the 20th century, Wilson. But one cannot argue that though they did not elect a president, they did ultimately shape one party and by creating the modern Democrats, inadvertently converted the big spend party of Harrison and TR to the party of Harding and Coolidge-a party I of which could be proud.

I like the idea of a Reagan caucus but with the top down instrumentation of the GOP with leaders ranging from Mike Johnson and (probably) Rick Scott in Congress to Lara Trump at the RNC, and abetted by Heritage and CPAC, could a Reagan Caucus make a difference? I have doubts though since this is my first pass as this idea, I will explore its value.
