January 6th was not an “assault on democracy” but rather the culmination of a crisis of legitimacy that manifested as a violent and procedural challenge to the democratic process.
Legitimacy really is at the crux of the problem we face here. 1/6 wasn’t as destructive as the riots of summer 2020. But it was an attack on the Capitol, not an attack on jewelry stores. And an attempt to kill elected officials instead of an attack to sack an empty courthouse. But more than that it was important because of what it signified. It was a symbolically a far greater tragedy than those riots were.
