Among the prominent political leaders of today, who comes to mind for the least measure of devotion to anything, his family, his party, or his nation, other than himself, than Trump.
Trump says these things about servicemembers because he’s a coward. He dodged the draft (“bone spurs”) has never lived it down in his own mind and it makes him uncomfortable to see patriots who demonstrated the highest courage.
It's quite a demonstration of character. John Wayne came to later regret not serving during in WW2 but turned that regret into energetic support of the the military, and did what he could to be advocate for the military and to help tell the stories of their sacrifice.
