I definitely share your concerns about the potential blowback from a multi-party system, but I've come to the conclusion that the two-party system is broken beyond repair because of the growing power of internet information bubbles. I'm still doing my homework on finding the voting system that would do the best job at minimizing the number of seats that extreme parts would win, but I think a multiparty could work quite well.
